BrightHouse Love

Hi everyone! We are a group of junior and senior girls from Buhler High School who are trying to make a difference in the lives of others. For our Research and Writing in Focus class we chose the topic of domestic violence and ultimately came  together for our “Passion Project” to help the BrightHouse shelter provide a more comforting environment for families struggling in the aftermath of domestic abuse.

Domestic violence is one of the leading causes of homelessness for women and their children. Fortunately, the BrightHouse shelter is a free safe house with the capability to house up to 24 women and children escaping domestic violence. While some may only require the safety of the shelter for a few days, in other cases it may be necessary for the women to stay for periods as long as an entire year. Oftentimes, victims are forced to escape their abusive situations quickly and come to the shelter without any of their belongings, and while the six bedroom home is clean and warm, the bedrooms are in need of updating.

We believe that creating modern, comfortable rooms is just one step toward empowering the women to break the chains of abuse as they work toward brighter futures. Therefore, our goal is to raise enough to remodel each of the bedrooms in the safe house. With an estimated cost of $500 for each room renovation, our final goal would be $3,000 to cover all six bedrooms. It would be such a blessing to get those funds and be able redo each room!!

To hear more about our project and what you can do to help, please plan to come to any of the three services on this Sunday, March 10.

“Around the world, millions of people lack access to sustainable food sources, clean water, sanitation, education, and opportunity. The three programs supported by OGHS — Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, the Presbyterian Hunger Program, and Self-Development of People — all work in different ways to serve individuals and communities in need.”

Toddler Group

Every other Thursday, 9:15 am to 11:00 am

We are excited to launch a new toddler group at First Presbyterian for young parents/grandparents and caregivers who look after toddlers.

Volunteers help look after, read a story, do a craft or color with the children while the parents and caregivers have some adult time.”
